Fixing a Dysfunctional Congress
This is what happens when you sit around and let your mind wander. If you have any other suggestions on how to fix congress, leave them in the comments.
- Any entity receiving taxpayer funding of any kind (including companies receiving tax breaks) is barred from donating to or accepting donations from any political fund. e.g., Planned Parenthood
- Any tax-exempt entity is barred from donating to or accepting donations from any political fund. e.g., Religious entities, etc.
- Congressional salary raises may only be granted by the citizenry through a referendum placed on the ballot every two years. The ballot would include the current salary of Legislators.
- Congress shall pass no laws from which they are exempt.
- Congress shall not pay into nor receive a government-funded pension or healthcare.
- In the interest of transparency, any Bill presented in Congress must list any and all persons and or entities involved in the conception of, and or writing of said Bill, e.g., Lobbyist names, corporations, and or entities they represent.
- Begin the process to repeal the 17th Amendment, returning the election of U.S. Senators back to the State Legislators. This would go hand-in-hand with term limits for Congress.
- Term Limits for Congress. Two terms for U.S. Senators (12 years), and three terms for U.S. Representatives (six years). Along with the repeal of the 17th Amendment, this would guarantee a complete turnover of Congress every 6-12 years.
- In any non-electoral college election with more than two candidates, the winning candidate must receive more than 50% of the popular vote. If no candidate receives 50% or more of the popular vote, there shall be a runoff of the top two vote-getting candidates.
- Fiscal Transparency of Congress. Any and all congressional funds and payments made or received for any and all persons in Congress must be in the public domain. e.g. monies paid out for sexual allegations.
- Congresspersons shall be barred from employment with any lobbying group, corporation, or entity involved in any way, with any Bill presented in Congress, for a period of 10 years after retirement from Congress.
