New Yorkers Sing "God Bless America"

This short, powerful video brought me to tears. Honestly, I wish this beautiful song was our National Anthem! Watching and listening to the raucous outpouring of emotion, love, pride and compassion for all our Countrymen and women makes me wonder...

Where did we go wrong?

Besides the Democrats losing an election, what has changed so significantly in how we see ourselves, our Country, and our fellow Americans that could cause such political and social upheaval as to shake the very foundation of our 244-year-old Republic?  What has caused us to question our Constitution and Bill of Rights, the very parchment that holds the keys to the blueprint that built the greatest country the world has ever seen?

Americans are not blind to the vagaries and injustices that beset so many of our countrymen and women. Everyone understands we have work to do in all areas of our society. Our country was built on the bedrock of individual freedoms for everyone, and we should continue to strive towards that goal, but tearing down this country with violence, riots, and hatred is not the way to do it. You cannot win hearts and minds with vicious attacks on people and places. You cannot build respect with humiliation and degradation. You cannot breed brotherhood with anger and divisiveness. You cannot grow love with fear-mongering and hatred, and we cannot fulfill the founder's aspirations that are reflected in our flag, if we dishonor our brethren, if we dishonor their hearts and souls.

We have to find our way back, people. We have to find a way to live together, respect each other, care for each other, and stand by one another - as we have always done - even as we disagree. We must get back to respecting the rights of others to have an opinion that differs from ours without name-calling, without ridicule, without humiliation and intimidation. We must get back to being Americans first.

If we can't find a way to do that, if we can't find a way to bridge the gap, we are lost. We will have thrown away an immense opportunity, a gift of ethereal proportions - a gift like no other - which was bestowed upon us 244 years ago by men and women who craved freedom, who fought against tyranny, and who risked everything for an ideal unknown to the world - a country where the citizens governed themselves - the "Great Experiment in Liberty." To allow this to happen without a fight, without Americans banding together, each and every one of us, to meet our country's flaws, imperfections, and weaknesses head-on would be the end of our great Nation as we know it.

And that would be the greatest shame of all.
